According to World Health Organization survey data, approximately 27%of the global population suffers from sleep disorders. In China alone, over 300 million people experience sleep disorders, with the incidence of insomnia among adults as high as 38.2%.

Sleep disorders have become a significant public health issue that cannot be ignored.Hydrogen-oxygen inhalation therapy may offer a solution to this challenge!

Asclepius Meditec's 84th global paper has been published, once again validating the role of hydrogen-oxygen in improving sleep disorders!

New Advances in Hydrogen-Oxygen Medicine

Obstructive sleep apnea(OSA)is a common sleep disorder associated with cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and myocardial hypertrophy.Chronic intermittent hypoxia(CIH)in OSA triggers the generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS),leading to oxidative damage and apoptosis.Frequent apnea episodes increase intrathoracic pressure, aggravate left ventricular load, and ultimately lead to cardiac hypertrophy【1】.

Hydrogen gas exhibits multiple beneficial effects, including antioxidant,anti-inflammatory,and anti-apoptotic properties.Due to its small size and light weight,it can effectively disperse throughout the body【2】.Studies have shown that hydrogen inhalation can improve ischemia-reperfusion injury and left ventricular hypertrophy in rats【3】【4】.Regarding the effects of hydrogen, current research mostly focuses on oxidative stress, inflammation, and other aspects, with few studies on the relationship between hydrogen and iron metabolism under hypoxic conditions.

To address this,Professor Ji Ensheng's team at Hebei University of Chinese Medicine conducted research on hydrogen alleviating cardiac hypertrophy caused by chronic intermittent hypoxia(CIH)by regulating iron metabolism, and successfully published their findings in the internationally renowned academic journal*Current Issues in Molecular Biology.

In this experiment, rats were randomly divided into four groups:normoxic control group(Con),chronic intermittent hypoxia group(CIH),chronic intermittent hypoxia+hydrogen-oxygen inhalation group(CIH+H₂),and hydrogen-oxygen inhalation group(H₂).

CIH and CIH+H₂rats were exposed to controlled hypoxia to simulate the OSA mouse model.Rats in the CIH+H₂group and the H₂group were administered H₂–O₂mixed gas inhalation daily using the Hydrogen-Oxygen Atomization Machine(AMS-H-01,66%hydrogen and 33%oxygen,Shanghai Asclepius Meditec Co.,Ltd.)【5】.

WGA immunofluorescence staining(scale bar=50µm,n=3)

The above figure shows that WGA immunofluorescence staining revealed that compared to the Con group, the cross-sectional area of cardiomyocytes in the CIH group was significantly larger, and hydrogen-oxygen intervention alleviated this trend.

mRNA levels of MYH7,Nppa,and Nppb in cardiac tissue

Q-PCR(quantitative PCR)results showed that mRNA levels of MYH7(myosin heavy chain 7),Nppa(atrial natriuretic peptide A),and Nppb(brain natriuretic peptide)were significantly increased in the CIH group and subsequently decreased in the CIH+H₂group,as shown in the figure above.

MYH7 is a key pathogenic gene that can trigger myocardial hypertrophy.

Nppa is a hormone secreted by atrial cardiomyocytes;Atrial natriuretic peptide secretion increases when atrial load is elevated.

Nppb reflects cardiac function;patients with heart failure have elevated B-type natriuretic peptide levels.

These findings indicate that exposure to CIH leads to myocardial hypertrophy, and hydrogen-oxygen intervention effectively mitigates the associated pathological damage.Hydrogen-Oxygen Gas Has a Significant Impact on CIH-Induced Myocardial Hypertrophy and Pathological Changes!

Research on Hydrogen-Oxygen Gas Improving Sleep

Regarding the improvement of sleep by hydrogen-oxygen gas,Professor Ji Ensheng's team conducted related research as early as 2018!

Using the Asclepius Meditec Hydrogen-Oxygen Nebulizer to provide high-concentration hydrogen-oxygen mixed inhalation(66.6%hydrogen+33.3%oxygen)increases oxygen flow, balances sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve imbalances, alleviates and relaxes nerves, thereby improving sleep quality.

Concentration:66.6%Hydrogen+33.3%Oxygen

This experiment successfully validated the effect of hydrogen-oxygen medicine on sleep apnea hypertension and was published in the internationally renowned academic journal*Journal of Cellular Biochemistry[6].

Hydrogen-oxygen included in new technology promotion

On December 19,2023,the Shandong Provincial Health Commission issued the"Notice of the Shandong Provincial Health Commission on Announcing the 2023 Shandong Provincial Appropriate Health Technology Promotion Projects"(Lu Wei Han[2023]No.651)."Application of Hydrogen-Oxygen Inhalation in Improving Sleep-Disordered Breathing"and"Clinical Application of Hydrogen-Oxygen Nebulized Inhalation in the Perioperative Period of Total Hip Replacement in the Elderly"were listed as the 2023 Shandong Provincial Appropriate Health Technology Promotion Projects, and were also designated as provincial continuing medical education projects for grassroots health technicians in 2024.

Sleep is of great significance to health.Long-term poor sleep, for the elderly population, can even induce the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. In recent years, there have been continuous media reports of sudden death cases caused by staying up late, reminding people that they must pay attention to improving sleep quality.Asclepius Meditec hopes that through research in this area,hydrogen-oxygen medicine can help humanity embrace better sleep!
