As autumn arrives, the days grow shorter and the nights longer.

Office worker Xiao Chen

faces a familiar struggle:

physically drained

but mentally alert,

counting sheep until their heart races,

tossing and turning through sleepless nights.

Stories like Xiao Chen’s are far from uncommon

many people experience

insomnia or restless sleep as autumn sets in.

Try Hydrogen–Oxygen Inhalation for Restful Nights!

01
Why is Insomnia Common in Autumn?

Why does sleep often get worse for many people in autumn? The reasons are complex, but three key factors stand out:

First, changes in the circadian rhythm. As days shorten and nights lengthen, the body’s internal clock can become misaligned, making it harder to fall asleep or causing people to wake up too early.

Second, temperature fluctuations.Autumn brings larger swings between hot days and cool nights, which can disrupt sleep depth and stability, leading to frequent nighttime awakenings.

Third, seasonal mood changes. The withering of plants and the quieter, somber atmosphere of autumn can trigger feelings of melancholy—sometimes called“autumn blues.”These mood shifts can increase anxiety and contribute to insomnia.

Traditional methods for improving sleep are often slow to work or difficult to follow, and their results can be disappointing. As a novel approach, hydrogen–oxygen inhalation is gaining attention for its potential to promote better sleep.

Hydrogen-Oxygen vs Insomnia

Research suggests that insomnia is closely linked to hypoxia. When someone experiences several nights of poor sleep, the brain’s oxygen demand increases significantly.Even mild hypoxia can cause heightened alertness, which further increases oxygen consumption, creating a vicious cycle of insomnia→hypoxia→insomnia.

Hydrogen–oxygen therapy helps transport and diffuse oxygen[1].Hydrogen can assist oxygen in reaching the brain, improving brain oxygen levels, which may help people with insomnia fall asleep more easily and reach deeper stages of sleep.

In clinical studies, sympathetic nervous system activity is often used to assess sleep quality.A study in Japan foundthat after four weeks, participants who inhaled hydrogen–oxygen had significantly lower sympathetic nerve activity during sleep, indicating that hydrogen–oxygen inhalation can improve sleep quality in people with insomnia.[2]

Both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves are part of the autonomic nervous system. The sympathetic nerve acts like an“accelerator,”while the parasympathetic nerve functions as a“brake.”Good sleep requires reducing sympathetic activity while enhancing parasympathetic activity.

Domestic researchers have also studied hydrogen–oxygen therapy for sleep. In their experiments, participants inhaled a hydrogen–oxygen gas mixture for more than three hours daily over a period of more than three months.Clinical observations showed that insomnia symptoms improved after just two weeks, with results reaching statistical significance(P<0.05).[3]

Application of Hydrogen-Oxygen in Improving Sleep

Building on the proven benefits of hydrogen–oxygen inhalation for sleep, the Shandong Provincial Health Commission officially recognized its use in 2023 by including“hydrogen–oxygen inhalation for sleep-related breathing disorders”in the 2023 Shandong Provincial Appropriate Health Technology Promotion Project. It was also designated as a provincial continuing medical education program for grassroots health technicians in 2024.

In 2024,the Tai’an City Hydrogen Sleep Technology Innovation Center was approved and established, further advancing the clinical application of hydrogen–oxygen therapy in sleep medicine.

These initiatives have given new momentum to the use of hydrogen–oxygen therapy in the field of sleep. With continued promotion and development,it is expected that more people struggling with autumn insomnia will be able to use hydrogen–oxygen therapy to overcome restless nights and enjoy peaceful, restorative sleep every autumn.
