Hydrogen-Oxygen Inhalation Approved as New Medical Technology
On May 10, the official WeChat public account “Changhai Hao” of Shanghai Changhai Hospital (The First Affiliated Hospital of the Naval Medical University) published an article titled “Hydrogen–Oxygen Inhalation: Changhai Hospital Adds a New Tool for the Treatment of COPD.”
Led by Director Shang Yan, the team from the Department of General Practice of Changhai Hospital promoted the clinical implementation of hydrogen–oxygen therapy; the submitted“Hydrogen–oxygen inhalation therapy”, after four years of rigorous review and multiple rounds of expert defense, recently passed the approval of Shanghai Municipal New Medical Technology (Non-restricted Category), becoming a new therapeutic tool in the field of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treatment at Changhai Hospital.

Effects of Hydrogen-Oxygen Inhalation on COPD
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the most common chronic respiratory disease in China, with approximately 100 million patients nationwide, ranking as the third most common chronic disease after hypertension and diabetes.
In 2024, health services for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were included in the National Basic Public Health Service Program.
As early as 2021, a prospective clinical trial led by Academician Zhong Nanshan of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of the National Clinical Research Center for Respiratory Diseases provided high-quality evidence-based support for the clinical application of hydrogen–oxygen therapy[1].
Zhong Nanshan pointed out that hydrogen–oxygen inhalation is expected to exert therapeutic effects in patients with COPD, particularly during acute exacerbations, by effectively relieving symptoms and improving oxygen saturation.

Summary
Based on the role of hydrogen–oxygen inhalation therapy in the prevention and treatment of COPD, and with the concrete implementation of national policies incorporating COPD into the National Basic Public Health Service Program, it is believed that more medical institutions, like Changhai Hospital, will leverage this new technology to delay disease progression, promote pulmonary rehabilitation, and improve quality of life.
