WHO Highlights Concern Over Abnormal Increase in COVID-19 Infections

The World Health Organization has raised concerns about a recent abnormal rise in COVID-19 infections, particularly highlighted during the Paris Olympics, where at least 40 athletes were reported infected with COVID-19 and other respiratory pathogens. The international community is urged to stay vigilant, and high-risk populations are advised to receive COVID-19 vaccinations.Globally, the COVID-19 positive detection rate has slightly exceeded 10%,while in Europe it has climbed to just above 20%.

In China, the national positive rate among influenza-like illness cases rose to 18.7%in July.

According to a report released by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention on August 9,there were 203 new severe COVID-19 cases and 2 new deaths nationwide. The positive detection rate among influenza-like illness cases increased steadily, from 8.9%during July 1–7 to 18.7%during July 22–28.

For COVID-19,vaccination remains the primary preventive measure.Vaccines help build a strong immune barrier, effectively reducing the risk of severe illness and death, though they cannot guarantee complete protection against infection.

The truly critical factor is immunity—immunity, and more immunity!

Think of immunity as the body’s built-in“armor,”a comprehensive defense system that can fight off viruses and bacteria, eliminate mutated or infected cells, and support the proper functioning of organs.

Interestingly,hydrogen-oxygen inhalation has been included multiple times in official COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment guidelines.Scientific studies suggest that hydrogen-oxygen therapy may enhance human immunity[1].

As early as 2019,the international journal Redox Biology highlighted the central role of mitochondria in immune cells:“The multiple roles of mitochondria in different immune cells are continuously being uncovered, consistently indicating that mitochondria can dominate immune cells.”Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, generating energy through aerobic respiration.Their efficiency directly affects the strength of the immune system.Inhaling a hydrogen-oxygen mixture can positively influence immunity by improving mitochondrial function in cells.

How Does Hydrogen-Oxygen Protect Mitochondria

In a hydrogen-oxygen gas mixture, hydrogen helps transport oxygen, allowing mitochondria to get the oxygen they need for efficient energy production through aerobic respiration.

Hydrogen also selectively neutralizes harmful free radicals—the“troublemakers”that disrupt mitochondrial balance.

The novel coronavirus can generate reactive free radicals that attack mitochondria, compromising their function.

The diagram below illustrates how hydrogen-oxygen gas works to combat viruses, protect and activate mitochondria, and boost immune cell activity[2].

Hydrogen-Oxygen vs.COVID-19

Academician Zhong Nanshan and colleagues launched a multicenter,open-label trial titled“Inhalation of Hydrogen-Oxygen Mixed Gas for Improving Disease Severity and Dyspnea in COVID-19 Patients.”The study showed significant improvements as early as the 2nd and 3rd day of treatment, continuing through the final session of hydrogen-oxygen inhalation therapy.

In 2022,a collaborative clinical trial was conducted by Ruijin Hospital,Zhongshan Hospital, and Huashan Hospital, led by Professors Qu Jieming,Zhang Wenhong,Song Yuanlin, and others. This prospective, multicenter, randomized controlled trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of hydrogen-oxygen nebulizers as an adjuvant therapy for COVID-19,once again confirming that hydrogen-oxygen therapy is both safe and effective[3].

Hydrogen-oxygen inhalation not only helps relieve COVID-19 symptoms but also reduces inflammation thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. As an evidence-based therapy for COVID-19,hydrogen-oxygen inhalation deserves broader recognition and use.
